Psychology is a large discipline. AAPSO knows every member may not be interested in certain topics, and that’s okay. That’s why we have our initiative system. The initiative system creates subgroups, or specialty committees, within the organization. Each e-board member is responsible for selecting at least one initiative they are interested in and want to tackle for one school year. AAPSO uses the initiatives as the basis for events.

AAPSO members should select at least one specialty committee they would like to be involved with. The specialty committee will have separate meetings from the monthly general body meeting. Communication within specialty committees is more in depth; however, the progress of the committee, including establishing events and speakers, is still discussed as a whole.

The initiative system does not weaken the organization as a whole, but rather strengths it by allowing different subgroups to teach each other about different topics. Since AAPSO is a student organization, we want students to be able to use their membership to get ahead in their careers and make useful connections. It’s kind of like doing a group project, but we all have an equal share in the result.
